South Sudan: Sensitising local communities on gender

In the framework of AWEPA’s programme “South Sudan National Legislative Assembly (SSNLA) and Local Councils“, councillors of the Yei River County organised an outreach visit to Rasol Boma to interact with the local grassroots community in March 2014. The councilors aimed to raise awareness on issues of gender, with a focus on the girl child. They stressed the importance of gender sensitivity and covered topics including girl child education, HIV and AIDs, and segregation. Watch video

On 8-9 October 2015, AWEPA held an international Parliamentary Seminar on “Peace, Security and Sustainable Development”, with a special focus on the role of African and European Parliaments in tackling the Root Causes and Consequences of Violent Extremism and Terrorism. The seminar was organised in the framework of the AWEPA Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Programme, and was hosted by the Belgian Senate in Brussels. Councillor outreach visit: Protecting natural resources in South Sudan

In the framework of AWEPA’s programme “South Sudan National Legislative Assembly (SSNLA) and Local Councils“, councillors of the Lainya County, in conjunction with AWEPA, organised an outreach visit to Wuji Payam to interact with the local grassroots community. The discussions placed a special emphasis on the protection of natural resources and the public revenues generated. Key issues identified included a lack of transparency and accountability in revenue collection processes, which affects development and service delivery in the county as a whole. The councillors made recommendations and, alongside the community members, agreed on ways forward regarding all issues raised. Watch video

Understanding Women’s Challenges in South Sudan

In October 2011, six women Members of the South Sudan National Legislative Assembly (NLA) travelled to the rural areas of Mundri East County and Western Equatoria State to meet with local women organisations. During the visit, the MPs and local women discussed the challenges they face due to the lack of infrastructure in South Sudan. Through these consultations, the MPs developed a more clear understanding of the needs of the rural populations, which included hospitals, transport and roads, schools, seeds for agriculture, clean water, and power, among others. The women also discussed the prevalence of youth pregnancy, and the spread of diseases such as Malaria, Typhus and Nodding. Watch video

Fighting the persisting practice of FGM/C

The Parliament of Burkina Faso is seeking concrete ways to take action against female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) that is still widely practice throughout the country. During a two-day workshop organised by the National Assembly, in cooperation with the Association of European Parliamentarians with Africa (AWEPA), over fourty Members of Parliaments (MPs), representatives of the government and local NGOs exchanged ideas on how best to undertake and coordinate action towards the abandonment of the practice. The workshop resulted in the adoption of proposed “Key Parliamentary Actions” for MPs to undertake in order to favour the abandonment of FGM/C in Burkina Faso. Watch video
