History

AWEPA has been active in Belgium since its inception. Even before AWEPA began focusing on peace building, reconciliation and democratisation across Africa, a considerable number of important Belgian MPs were involved in the struggle against Apartheid. The Belgian section remains a significant and active group within AWEPA, with several members serving on AWEPA's Council and Executive Committee.

Currently supported by a number of important, active parliamentary members, the Belgium Office operates in close collaboration with three key political coordinators. They work together to support the effective functioning of parliaments in Africa, with a particular concentration on the Great Lakes Region (Rwanda, Burundi and Democratic Republic of Congo) due historic ties. 

After several years of operation, the AWEPA Belgium office was offered an office in the Belgian Federal Parliament to improve cooperation with the National Assembly, Political Parties, Local Government and the media. This stimulated even closer contact with Belgian MPs regarding African development issues and policies.
