History

AWEPA began collaborating with the Burundi Parliament in 1997, at a time when its programmes were coordinated by just two Members of Parliament.

AWEPA has a history of bringing former enemies together in conflict areas to stimulate political dialogue and promote peace and reconciliation. AWEPA has also been active in this regard in Burundi. Since 1993, after the assassination of the first democratically elected President, Melchior Ndadaye, Burundi emmersed in civil war for over ten years.

In an attempt to stop the war, transitional institutions were negotiated with rebel groups. These negotiations resulted in the signing of the Arusha Peace Agreement in August 2000.

This transitional period ended in 2006, after the arrival of new democratically elected institutions. During the peace process, many workshops on internal dialogue were organised by AWEPA and the Transitional Parliament in order to support peace and reconciliation from the inside. As a result, the Burundi population came to understand the Arusha Peace Agreement and were aware of Parliaments involvement in the peace process.  Read more...
