Eminent Advisory Board

AWEPA is being guided by the constructive and inspiring advice of the Eminent Advisory Board. This Board meets annually to discuss the policy and programmes of AWEPA and to make suggestions for future priorities regarding developments in Africa. The board members are appointed for an indefinite period of time.

Council and President

The highest political body within AWEPA is the Council, which comprises representatives from the AWEPA sections in the European Parliament and the national parliaments of Europe. The Council elects the Executive Committee, which is accountable to the Council.

The Council operates as a general assembly for a five year term and meets on a minimum once a year. The Council decides on the overall policy of AWEPA and is chaired by the President, Ms. Miet Smet.

Executive Committee

AWEPA's Executive Committee is the executive board of the organisation and meets four times a year. It is elected by the Council for a period of five year to prepare and under supervision of the Council executes the policy of the organisation. It is composed of the President and Vice-Presidents.

Political Coordinators

Some AWEPA members play crucial roles as Political Coordinators. They guide the AWEPA programmes politically in one or more countries or steer programmes on political and thematic issues. They are involved in the whole project management cycle of AWEPA's programmes.

AWEPA's members

Both current and former Members of Parliament in Europe are members of AWEPA. Currently AWEPA represents some 1500 members. AWEPA has members in the parliaments of almost all EU member states, plus Norway, Switzerland, Rumania, Bulgaria and the European Parliament.

Sections

The members of AWEPA in the national parliaments or the European Parliament togheter form a section. AWEPA facilitates visits by African Members of Parliaments (MPs) that meet with sections to inform the European MPs on critical issues for Africa, thereby sensitising them to take action. Section members are also invited to participate in AWEPA's programmes in Africa or Europe, especially when this concerns their area of expertise.
