118th IPU Assembly Print
From 13-18 April 2008, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) will be holding its 118th Assembly in Cape Town, South Africa. Hosted by the Parliament of South Africa, this Assembly is one of the largest gatherings of parliamentarians from across the world, and AWEPA has been invited to send a observer delegation.

AWEPA's delegation to the IPU Assembly will include Dr. Jan Nico Scholten, President of AWEPA, Professor Ben Turok, Member of the South African Parliament and Chair of the NEPAD Contact Group of African Parliamentarians, and Ms. Jessica Longwe, AWEPA Director of Partner Relations.

During the Assembly, Standing Committees will meet to discuss the following topics:

  • The role of parliaments in striking a balance between national/human security and individual freedom
  • Averting threats to democracy
  • Parliamentary oversight of State policies on foreign aid and Migrant workers
  • Human trafficking
  • Xenophobia
  • Human rights
