European Parliamentarians with Africa

On 26-28 November, the Dutch House of Representatives, World Health Organisation and Inter-Parliamentary Union organised a conference entitled "Parliamentarians take action on maternal and newborn health", in The Hague, The Netherlands.

In total, 65 countries gathered at this conference to discuss the issue of Safe Motherhood. They exchanged strategies, started partnerships and consulted with representatives of the UN about support and advocacy. The aim of the conference was global and political awareness to reduce child and maternal mortality (Millennium Development Goal # 4 and # 5) and to set up global strategic networks.

Hon. Chantal Gill'ard, Dutch MP and Head of the AWEPA section in the Dutch Parliament took the initiative to hold this conference.

After this conference Chantal Gill'ard (PvdA Party) together with Kathleen Ferrier (CDA Party) and Esmé Wiegman-Van Meppel Scheppink (CU Party) put forward an amendment aiming to use € 1.5 million within the article on "Reproductive Health" to develop heat resistant oxytocine which has been broadly adopted. This medicine is produced by a group of organisations and companies led by the WHO department Making Pregnancy Safer and BioConnenction. Oxytocine is on the WHO list of priority medicines for Europe and the World. It is used to stop bleeding after a delivery. Bleedings after delivery cause 25% of all maternal mortality. According to the WHO this remedy can save 125.000 lives per year.

Amendement Oxytocine van het Nederlandse Sectiehoofd Chantal Gill'ard

Op 26 tot 28 november heeft er een interparlementaire conferentie plaatsgevonden over veilig moederschap in het gebouw van de Tweede Kamer in Den Haag, georganiseerd door de Tweede Kamer, Wereld Gezondheid Organisatie en Interparlementaire Unie. Parlementariërs uit 65 landen zijn bijeen gekomen om strategieën uit te wisselen, partnerschappen aan te gaan en te overleggen met vertegenwoordigers van de Verenigde Naties over hulp en pressie. Het tegengaan van moedersterfte is één van de millennium ontwikkelingsdoelstellingen, waarbij maatregelen als eerlijke seksuele voorlichting, goede begeleiding tijdens de zwangerschap en toegang tot noodhulp bij bevalling van belang zijn.

Het AWEPA sectie hoofd in het Nederlands parlement, Chantal Gill'ard, lid van de Tweede Kamer voor de PvdA, is initiatiefneemster van deze conferentie.

Na deze conferentie heeft Chantal Gill'ard samen met Kathleen Ferrier (CDA)  en Esmé Wiegman-Van Meppel Scheppink (CU) amendement om hittestabiel oxytocine te ontwikkelen ingediend welke breed is aangenomen. Het middel wordt gebruikt om de bloeding na de bevalling te stoppen. Bloedingen na de bevalling veroorzaken 25% van alle moedersterfte. Volgens de WHO kan dit middel 125.000 levens per jaar redden.
