AWEPA Section in Estonia Organises Seminar: Partnering with Africa Print

On 17 April 2007, an Africa Day will be organised in Tallinn by the Parliament of Estonia, AWEPA, and Mondo (NGO), in order to discuss recent developments in relations between Africa and the European Union.

The Swedish Embassy, Danish Embassy and Estonian Foreign Policy Institute are also supporting the seminar. The aim of the event is to contribute to Estonia's future partnership with Africa by looking beyond the out-dated "donor-recipient" relationship and bringing various perspectives into the discussion.

The seminar will be made up of 3 sessions on the following topics:

  • Africa and the European Union: An update of recent progress in relationships between Africa and the European Union;
  • Nordic Countries - Lessons in Africa: Lessons to be learnt from the cooperation between Nordic countries and Africa as an example for Estonia;
  • Estonia - Welcome to Africa: Positive examples of relations between Africa and Estonia at different levels (politicians, private sector and NGOs etc.).

The seminar will be opened by AWEPA's Secretary General, and the Head of the AWEPA Section and Africa Parliamentary Group in the Estonian Parliament. Various experts will make presentations including Mr. Andres Kasekamp (Director Estonian Foreign Policy Institute), H.E. Dag Hartelius (Swedish Ambassador) and Mr. Mati Raidma (Director Mondo).

The seminar will provide a great opportunity to bring together Estonian decision makers and inform them about Africa. Participants will include Estonian members of Parliament, parliamentary advisors, representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, diplomats, NGOs, students from Tallinn University and the press.
