The history of Mother's Day is centuries old and goes back to the times of ancient Greeks, who held festivities to honor Rhea, the mother of the gods. The Resolution for having a dedicated Mother's Day in modern history was signed by US President Woodrow Wilson on the 8th of May, 1914.

Since then Mother's Day has evolved in North America, Europe and other parts of the world. Many African countries have adopted the idea of one Mother's Day. Although celebrated on different days throughout the world most countries celebrate Mother's day on the second Sunday of May, which is this year on the 10th of May.

In Africa there are millions of very dedicated mothers, many pitting themselves against such monsters as HIV AIDS, poverty and ignorance to ensure their children can be healthy, can go to school, can have a future. AWEPA would like to therefore take this opportunity to pay respect to these unsung heroines. As William Ross Wallace (American poet) said; "The hand that rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the world."
