Resolution Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Council of the Slovak Republic Print

The Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Council of the Slovak republic discussed the Draft Elements for an All-Party proposed by the Association of the European Parliamentarians for Africa (AWEPA)

and

A. concerned at the dire economic and humanitarian situation in Zimbabwe, the plight of many millions of people suffering from food shortages, and the reported violence during the current elections period:
  • calls on the Government to raise the issue as a matter of urgency at international level, at European Union level, and in its diplomatic contacts with aid-recipient countries in the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC);
  • calls on the Government to promote the broadest and most effective international observation of any further rounds of campaigning, voting and counting of votes in Zimbabwe, the second round of presidential elections being scheduled for 27th June, 2008;
  • welcomes UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon's call for a UN role to resolve the crisis while the current democratic deadlock persists;
  • deplores the reported "militarization" of election tactics in Zimbabwe, human rights repressions and reported deaths, threats, beatings and torture of opposition supporters, election workers, trade unionists, police, medical workers and all other individuals;
  • calls for the immediate release of people arrested in Zimbabwe for political purposes during the elections period and who are being held without the prospect of a fair and expeditious trial;
  • calls for full compliance by the Zimbabwean Government and parties with the SADC Guidelines on the Conduct of Democratic Elections;
  • welcomes the continuing aid and assistance which is being giving to the people of Zimbabwe and looks forward to supporting the reconstruction of Zimbabwe's democratic institutions and the protection of its economic assets;
  • looks forward to re-establishing warm relations with the parliament of Zimbabwe following a successful democratic conclusion to the elections process.

B. the Chairman of the Committee is obliged;

to inform about this resolution of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Council of the Slovak Republic concerning the situation in Zimbabwe the Speaker of the National Council of the Slovak Republic, the Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic, the Minister of the Foreign Affairs of the Slovak Republic, the Secretary General of the Association of the European Parliamentarians for Africa (AWEPA) and the Government of the Zimbabwe.
