Africa Day - Breaking the Silence: Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting

Location: Barlaeus Gymnasium, Amsterdam, the Netherlands
Time: 16.00 – 17.00 hrs
Presenters: Anthonia Emegha (Miss Africa Netherlands 2011-2012), Jeff Balch (AWEPA International), Zahra Naleie (Federation of Somali Association in the Netherlands)
Moderator: Désirée Bonis (MP PvdA)
More is needed to break the silence on Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C). During this workshop Miss Africa Netherlands (M.A.N.) and the Association of European Parliamentarians with Africa (AWEPA) in cooperation with the National Committee for International Cooperation and Sustainable Development will offer you information about this act of violation of women’s rights. Due to the sensitivity of the subject women and girls who have undergone FGM hardly talk about it and we hope to help change that. This workshop gives the opportunity to learn and share knowledge and experience regarding this painful topic. Experts on the subject will speak about some of what is being done nationally and internationally (including political action) to stop FGM. The floor will then be opened for discussion, in which we hope to gather further considerations on breaking the silence and in finding long lasting solutions to eradicating this harmful practice.
