Hon. Johan Verstreken
The AWEPA section in the Flemish Parliament was established in 2010 and is headed by Hon. Verstreken. Having served as the alderman of the city of Ostend Hon. Verstreken became a member of the Flemish Parliament in 2004. In 2014, he was elected Senator. Currently, he is a member of several parliamentary committees, including the Committees for Development and Cooperation, Home Affairs, Justice and Foreign Affairs, and National Defence, where he focuses on human rights, children’s rights and development cooperation. In 2011, Hon. Verstreken participated as an international election observer as part of an AWEPA mission to Benin. He is a member of the Socialistische Partij Anders (SPA), and represents this party in the areas of Foreign Affairs, European issues, Development Cooperation, Mobility and Public Works. He is also a member of the Committee of the Regions, Benelux Parliament.
Resolutions on War Rape and on FGM
The Flemish Parliament and AWEPA Section are in the process of preparing two resolutions, one on war rape in Eastern Congo and the Great Lakes region, and another on Female Genital Mutilation.
