The Austrian AWEPA Section, in cooperation with NorthSouthDialogue of Parliaments and the National Council of Austria, held a round table on “Austria’s Double Taxation Treaties” on 13 April 2016 in the Austrian Parliament. The event aimed to inform participants of the impact of double taxation treaties on developing countries and stimulate discussion on the necessary reforms with a special focus on the case of the Austrian double taxation treaties in force.

Hon. Petra Bayr, Head of the Austrian Section, opened the round table with an overview of recent developments.  This was followed by Prof. Pasquale Pistone of the Institute for Austrian and International Tax Law at the University of Vienna, who introduced the background of double taxation treaties in general, but also identified problem areas and propose potential solutions.

Lastly Ms. Martina Neuwirth, Development Policy Expert at the Vienna Institute for International Dialogue and Cooperation (VIDC) analysed the impact of Austria’s double taxation treaties on developing countries from a civil society perspective, followed by a discussion with representatives from business, academia, NGOs and ministries. The round table was moderated by Ms. Karin Küblböck of the Austrian Research Foundation for International Development (ÖFSE).
