Hon. Sudraba is a Member of the Latvian Parliament. She is currently leader of the “For Latvia from the Heart” Party, which she founded in 2014. Previous positions within the Parliament include the role of Deputy State Secretary, which she held from 1994 to 2003. From 2004 to 2013, Hon. Sudraba was Auditor General. An economist by profession, she graduated from the University of Latvia in 1988 with a degree in economic planning. Her priority areas of interest include national development, public administration and good governance.
As a member of the Latvian Parliament, Hon. Sudraba is a member of the Budget and Finance (Taxation) Committee; the Public Expenditure and Audit Committee; the Tax Policy Subcommittee of the Budget and Finance (Taxation) Committee; the Information Technology and Innovative Entrepreneurship Subcommittee of the Economic, the Agricultural, Environmental and Regional Policy Committee; and Employment Subcommittee of the Social and Employment Matters. In addition, she is a member of the Latvian delegation to the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
As Head of Section, Hon. Sudraba takes over from Hon. Ingrida Circene, who was active in the Latvian Section for many years. The Section has been re-established with a number of new Latvian MPs joining the group.
Hon. Sudraba considers it to be very important to maintain good relations between European and African Parliamentarians. It is a way of creating mutual understanding which triumphs over the differences of race, religion and tradition, and gives rise to an understanding of the common values and challenges.
