Yambio, South Sudan – AWEPA conducted a 6-day Training of Trainers (ToT) on the “decentralisation and local government system” in South Sudan, from 10-15 November 2014.
Two staff members from each of the Counties of Najero, Ezo and Tombura participated in the ToT workshop, which was organised in cooperation with the Ministry of Local Government in Western Equatoria State.
Subsequently, the local trainers – supported by AWEPA – trained the 35 Councillors in their respective County.
This was the first-ever training the Councillors have had on the local government system and the Local Government Act in South Sudan, as well as on their roles as Councillors.
In the Counties of Ezo and Najero, there had never been a council sitting. After the Training of Trainers workshop, the Councillors understood their roles and carried out their first council session. They debated and passed the budget for the County for the first time ever.
