On September 15, the United Nations celebrates the International Day of Democracy. To mark this day, we asked Parliamentarians from both Europe and Africa the following question:
“What do you think the politician’s role is in strengthening the voice of the people in Africa, to establish and maintain a healthy democracy?”
“Some people think that democracy is the will of people, but it is the tool for promoting the will of people, and the will of people is the direct interest of the people. The role of the politician comes by using all democratic methods to protect the interest of the people.
The role of the politician is to promote Rule of Law and by promoting Rule of Law, the politician is strengthening the voice of the people to know their rights and obligations.
A politician’s role is to represent the interest of the people, and that must agree with the national interest.
It is also to ensure that public resources are equitably distributed.
Democracy should be related to people’s traditions and culture in order to establish and maintain healthy democracy.”
Hon. Jasmine Samuel Adakayi
Deputy Speaker of the South Sudan National Legislative Assembly
