The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), AWEPA and the ECOWAS Parliament organised a webinar to take stock of ECOWAS on its fortieth anniversary and discuss the Parliament’s role in improving regional economic and political integration.
The webinar was moderated by Hon. Wolfgang Pirklhuber, Senior Parliamentary Advisor of AWEPA’s programme on “Taking up the Challenges and Opportunities of the Sustainable Development Goals: Regional African Parliaments in Development”.
Members of Parliament shared their thoughts on the integration process and its challenges; explored how the ECOWAS Parliament is driving an effective transition from ECOWAS of States to ECOWAS of people; and reviewed the Agricultural Policy in West Africa (ECOWAP), a central ECOWAS policy which aims to improve agriculture and competitiveness, implement intra-community trade regime and adapt to external trade regime.
This session is part of series of webinars in the context of the project “Making Agricultural Investment Works for Africa: a parliamentarian’s response to the land rush”, initiated by IISD together with African Regional Parliamentary Bodies.
The webinars aim to bring together parliamentarians to share their experience on common issues linked to agriculture and investment in land and to advance sustainable development.
