High Level Workshop on FGM/C takes place in Senegal

12-14 December 2014

Saly, Senegal – A high level workshop on Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting was organised from 12-14 December 2014, by the local parliamentary taskforce on FGM/C, with the support of AWEPA.

The workshop took place in the framework of AWEPA’s FGM/C programme, financed by UNICEF/UNFPA’s Joint Programme on FGM/C.

It brought together the leadership from each Committee of the National Assembly of Senegal, in order to further engage the National Assembly on this campaign, while encouraging Committees -other than the Committee on Health, Population, Social Affairs and National Solidarity- to work towards abandonment from a larger base of support.

The workshop aimed to increase the effectiveness of advocacy efforts vis-à-vis the relevant Ministries, and hopefully apply enough pressure on the Legislative and Executive branches of government to better ensure compliance with the existing law protecting women and girls from this harmful traditional practice.
