7 May 2014

Hon. Maria Martens

Amsterdam, the Netherlands – Hon. Maria Martens, Dutch Senator and Political Coordinator for AWEPA’s parliamentary capacity building programme in Zimbabwe, visited AWEPA’s Headquarters in Amsterdam to meet with Zimbabwe Watch (an independent coalition of organisations in the Netherlands that contributes to the strengthening of a democratic and prosperous Zimbabwe).

Mr. Hugo Knoppert, the Coordinator of Zimbabwe Watch, briefed Hon. Martens and AWEPA on his organisation’s efforts in the Netherlands and in Europe. Through these partnerships, Zimbabwe Watch aims to lobby for the importance of the Netherlands to remain active in Zimbabwe and to prevent the country from becoming more isolated. Mr. Knoppert noted that it is important to keep in dialogue with Zimbabwe with support from organisations which have the know-how and relevant expertise in order to attain a sustainable effect of development projects.

In addition, Hon. Martens interacted with the AWEPA project staff and discussed programmes, work priorities and views on topical issues related to Africa and in particular regarding the challenges and possibilities of the AWEPA Zimbabwe programme.
