Brussels, Belgium – As the 5th year of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) programme comes to an end, AWEPA held its final annual Steering Committee (SC) meeting for the programme at the Belgian Senate, in Brussels, on 9 October 2015. The meeting took place alongside the Parliamentary Seminar on “Peace, Security and Sustainable Development”, organised on 8-9 October by AWEPA and funded by the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida).
This activity brought together representatives from all programme partners, including the Pan African Parliament (PAP), the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), the Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the Parliament of the Economic and Monetary Community of West African States (CEMAC), the Southern African Development Community Parliamentary Forum (SADC-PF), the Network of African Parliamentarians (NAP), and AWEPA, among others.
The Steering Committee meeting served to review lessons learned from the MDG programme and provide strategic guidance for 2015 and beyond in the context of the transition from the MDGs to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The meeting was opened by the Political Coordinator of the MDG Programme, Mr. Holger Gustafsson, followed by a presentation of the high priority recommendations emanating from the external evaluation of the MDG Programme by Dr. Jeff Balch (Director of Research and Evaluation, AWEPA). Mr. Loic Whitmore (Programme Manager, AWEPA) then presented the draft outline of AWEPA’s programme with regional African parliaments 2016-2020. The floor was then opened to all participants for an open and lively discussion on the programme’s successes, points for improvement and planning for AWEPA’s future support to the realisation of the SDGs.
