Stockholm, Sweden – Hon. Kerstin Lundgren, MP and Head of AWEPA section in Sweden hosted a meeting on the Mid-Term Review (MTR) of AWEPA’s five year programme focused on parliamentary engagement towards achieving the Millenium Development Goals. The meeting, which brought together Swedish MPs Hon. Carina Hägg (member of the AWEPA Governing Council) and Hon. Holger Gustafsson (Political Coordinator of AWEPA’s MDG Programme) Karin Andersson (Sida) and Jeff Balch (Director of Research and Evaluation at AWEPA) served to discuss key findings of the recently conducted participatory review process and MTR report. Despite the challenge to establish a clear link between programme activities and the MDGs, for most partners (PAP, EALA, ECOWAS-P, CEMAC-P and SADC-PF) there are indications that the programme is enabling them to focus more attention on the MDGs in this crucial period up to the target deadline of 2015.
Programme implementation is on track and it is presumed that the programme can at least partly account for the improved performance on most MDGs in the majority of regions. Indications were given as to where attention should be focused in coming years, such as scrutinizing MDG-related expenditures and reallocating budget resources toward reaching those MDGs that are performing the weakest so far. Suggestions were made on how to overcome certain challenges such as monitoring programme progress through self-assessment tools.
