Rome, Italy – AWEPA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tostan, an NGO specialising in Community-Led Development. The purpose of this MoU is to provide a framework for cooperation between Tostan and AWEPA; it is meant to harness parliamentary commitment and engagement towards achieving broader positive social change and, in particular, supporting the abandonment of practices such as Female Genital Cutting (FGC). The MoU exists to promote the cooperation and coordination necessary to effectively work toward their common objectives; to influence political will and public policy, with the active involvement of parliamentarians; to develop intervention programmes in favour of positive social change led by communities and with the direct involvement and sustained support of their elected representatives.
AWEPA and Tostan have collaborated since 2012. Earlier in 2013, Tostan was involved in a workshop in March and again in September in Senegal, organised by AWEPA, UNFPA and UNICEF in cooperation with the Parliament of Senegal.
