Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – The EALA Committee on Regional Affairs and Conflict Resolution (RACR) has now arranged for Public Hearings to be held on 20 March in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The objective is to solicit for experts’ opinion and consider input which will be incorporated in the East African Community Integration (Education) Bill before it comes for the Second and Third Reading during the next EALA Plenary Session in Arusha, Tanzania (March/April 2014). During the Public Hearing, Members of the RACR Committee will meet with representatives from the Ministries of EAC Affairs, Home Affairs, Local Government, Gender and Education, as well as representatives from the Commission on Human Rights and Good Governance, the Registrar of Political Parties, the National Electoral Body and Civil Society Organizations.

The Committee held Public Hearings in Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Kenya in September 2013. These Public Hearings gave rise to the EAC Integration (Education) Bill, 2014. This Bill deals with civic education in the EAC region and aims to equip East African citizens with the necessary skills and information about the EAC. The Bill was introduced for First Reading during EALA’s Plenary Session in Kampala, Burundi, in January 2014.
