Nairobi, Kenya – AWEPA held a Strategic Planning meeting to review progress and opportunities within the context of its programme to support regional parliaments to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).
The annual meeting took place on 1 December 2016 on the side lines of the Second High Level Meeting (HLM2) of the Global Partnership for Effective Development Cooperation (GPEDC) in Nairobi, Kenya.
By organising the meeting, AWEPA aimed to bring together focal points in Africa’s Regional Parliaments and AWEPA programme staff. This served as a platform for coordination and consultation among all key stakeholders to the programme. The participants discussed common themes that can be addressed jointly through lesson learning, exchange and interaction.
Through the meeting, AWEPA also provided a platform for the regional parliaments to engage with existing and potential funding partners towards increasing support and raising awareness of the differing structures, objectives, priorities and challenges they face.
The different sessions of the day were opened by AWEPA’s President, Minister of State Ms. Miet Smet, who welcomed the participants and introduced the objective of the meeting.
Session One provided an opportunity for reviewing these objectives and examining the progress of the SDG programme to date.
Following this, the programme partners had the chance to present an overview of their parliament’s objectives, structure, priorities, progress and challenge.
Representatives of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Parliament of the Central African Economic and Monetary Cooperation (CEMAC) and South African Development Community Parliamentary Forum (SADC-PF) attended the meeting.
AWEPA staff also held bilateral meetings with members of each of these institutions over the course of the HLM2.
