Bern, Switzerland –  At its annual meeting, on 24 September 2014, the AWEPA Section in the Swiss Parliament will discuss recent developments in the Great Lakes Region, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Burundi.

First-hand information will be provided  on regional efforts among the twelve member states of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR). Dr. Markus Weilenmann, policy advisor of the Executive Secretariat of the ICGLR, will focus on the area of peace and security.

The meeting refers also to the initiative “Democracy Without Borders”, recently launched by the President of the Swiss Confederation, Didier Burkhalter, at the Locarno International Film Festival. The Swiss federal Department of foreign affairs supports this initiative which aims to strengthen democracy, peace and human rights by raising awareness in partner countries as well as among Swiss citizens about the challenges faced in countries where projects are carried out, and increasing their impact. One of the three specific projects aims to support women victims of violence in the Great Lakes region.
