European parliaments Print

AWEPA mobilises European parliamentarians on policy issues in African-European relations, development cooperation, debt relief, trade reform and democratization. In addition, AWEPA envisages to increase the number of European MPs that share their expertise in parliamentary capacity building programmes in Africa.

Members of AWEPA in a European parliament together form a section. To increase their role several initiatives are undertaken.

AWEPA has been organising seminars on Africa parallel to meetings of the European Union Presidency at least once annually for more than 20 years. The sections invovled play an important role in the organisation of this Seminar.

Establish AWEPA sections in new EU Member States

In the new EU countries AWEPA works to establish sections in the parliaments. By involving the new members in our activities in Europe and Africa, AWEPA strives to get Africa even more on the political agenda in the new EU Members States.

Expand our ACP-EU activities

In the light of Africa Carribean Pacific-European Union (ACP-EU) meetings AWEPA focuses its lobby on European development cooperation and European trade policies.

Children and AIDS

AWEPA entered into a five-year campaign on Children and AIDS with UNICEF. Besides meetings in Africa wherein European MPs are involved, awareness raising meetings for European MPs on Children and AIDS are planned in Europe, with the involvement of African MPs.

NEPAD

In 2005, AWEPA launched a multi-annual programme on NEPAD that has been developed in close consultation with African partners. Besides (sub)regional and national seminars in Africa, AWEPA also organises awareness raising meetings in Europe for European policy makers.
