Children and AIDS AWEPA has launched in 2004 a multi-year campaign on Children and AIDS, in cooperation with UNICEF, the North-South Center of the Council of Europe, the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund and others, to scale up the parliamentary efforts for Children and AIDS. The first preparations of this campaign began in September 2004, with the Parliamentary Consultation on Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) in Cape Town. This consultation resulted in the Cape Town Declaration, which contained guidelines on how parliamentarians make an unique contribution to scaling up efforts on behalf of orphans and vulnerable children. UNICEF and AWEPA have organised jointly in 2005 and 2006 a series of regional seminars in East and Southern Africa, which will be followed by national workshops in each parliament concerned. The campaign also takes place in Europe, by organising activities on the issue of children and AIDS in European parliaments.
