Maputo, 1-7 April. Senior Parliamentary Advisors for the AWEPA Mozambique programme Ms. Bodil Ceballos (Swedish MP) and Ms. Antonia Aviles (former Spanish MP) together with former Political Coordinator for Mozambique Dr. Jan Nico Scholten, had meetings in the National Assembly of Mozambique (http://www.parlamento.org.mz/) , among other visits.

Brussels, 18-21 March 2013. Nine members of the Human Rights Committee of the National Legislative Assembly of South Sudan went on a study visit to the European Parliament. Among others, the South Sudanese delegation met the European Parliament Sub-Committee on Human Rights and the President of the European Parliament, Martin Schultz.

Ndjamena, 18-20 February. In the framework of its programme “Strengthening regional parliaments to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)”,  AWEPA and the Parliament of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC) jointly organized a field visit and a seminar to broach the question of Lake Chad and the role of CEMAC parliamentarians in this field.

Amsterdam, 6 February. The 6th of February 2013 marked the tenth commemoration of the International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (http://www.who.int/topics/female_genital_mutilation/en/) , which is observed each year to raise awareness about this practice against human rights. This year, the Dutch AWEPA Section linked up to an international conference on abandoning FMG/C in the Netherlands and abroad. Bali, 23-24 March. Dr. Jeff Balch, Director of Research and Evaluation at AWEPA, participated in the latest meeting of the Steering Committee of the Global Partnership for Effective Development Cooperation. The Partnership, created in 2011, engages with a range of global policy processes in the lead up to the post-2015 development agenda. “There is a link between eradicating extreme poverty and dealing with fragile states”, said Dr. Balch at the meeting.

Saly, 15-19 March. Senegalese MPs met in Saly in a workshop on the role of parliamentarians in the abandonment of female genital mutilation / cutting. The debates were fortified by the participation of a delegation of the Parliament of Mali as well as Belgian AWEPA Political Coordinator for the FGM/C programme (http://a-dtap.awepa.org/index.php/en/programmes/thematic-programmes/gender/fgmc.html) , Senator Els van Hoof, and Political Coordinator for the Network of Women Parliamentarians of Central Africa (http://a-dtap.awepa.org/index.php/en/programmes/institutional-programmes/reseau-de-femmes-parlementaires-dafrique-centrale-rfpac.html) , former MP Magda de Meyer. Following the seminar, a field visit to villages in the region of Kolda took place.

Bujumbura, 11-13 March. The United Nations Office in Burundi (BNUB) (http://bnub.unmissions.org/ ) invited all Burundi political actors for a workshop to draw lessons from the 2010 electoral process and to discuss “elements for a credible road map towards the organization of inclusive, transparent, free and fair elections in 2015”. As Awepa has been playing an observatory role since 1997 in all electoral processes in this central African country, we have been invited to attend as a special observer.
