Understanding Women’s Challenges in South Sudan

In October 2011, six women Members of the South Sudan National Legislative Assembly (NLA) travelled to the rural areas of Mundri East County and Western Equatoria State to meet with local women organisations. During the visit, the MPs and local women discussed the challenges they face due to the lack of infrastructure in South Sudan. Through these consultations, the MPs developed a more clear understanding of the needs of the rural populations, which included hospitals, transport and roads, schools, seeds for agriculture, clean water, and power, among others. The women also discussed the prevalence of youth pregnancy, and the spread of diseases such as Malaria, Typhus and Nodding.
