Increasing cooperation: PAP delegation visits European Parliament

Brussels, Belgium – A delegation comprising the Clerk, Deputy Clerk and Senior Officials of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) undertook a study visit to the European Parliament on 18-20 April 2016.

The visit provided a valuable opportunity for the delegation to engage in discussion with a number of European Parliament Directors, including the Directors for Democracy Support, Legislative Acts, and Citizens’ Rights and Constitutional Affairs.

Through these meetings, the delegates gained insight into the inner workings of the European Parliament and its Directorate-Generals.

During the three-day visit, the PAP delegates were also able to meet with a number of Members of European Parliament (MEPs) to exchange views and share experience. Among others, meetings were held with Hon. Michael Gahler, Chair of the European Parliament Delegation to the PAP and lead member of the capacity-building programme for the PAP; Hon. Rainer Wieland, Vice President of the European Parliament with responsibilities for Africa; and Hon. David Martin, Lead Member on democracy support programme for Tanzania and Member of Committee on International Trade and Sub-Committee on Human Rights.

In addition, the delegates took the opportunity to meet with Hon. Bodil Valero, Head of the AWEPA Section in the European Parliament, as well as AWEPA Programme Manager, Ingrid Maria Johansen.

The study visit was brought to an end with by a debate with human rights activist, lawyer and Sakharov Prize Laureate Mr. Salih Osman.
