AWEPA Newsletter

Barcelona, Spain – As part of its celebrations of Africa Day 2016, the Spanish AWEPA Section held an informal breakfast meeting with African Consuls in Barcelona, Spain, on 31 May 2016.

The meeting was designed promote knowledge sharing and cooperation between AWEPA members and the African Consuls, through discussions on current issues affecting the African continent. It provided an opportunity to share viewpoints, concerns and assessments regarding Africa, its great cultural richness and diversity, its beauty, and its needs.

“As we know, Africa’s needs should be higher in our own political agenda, in such a way that, through our parliamentary networks we would be able to weave a web of support based on helping African parliaments, which aims to strengthen each country’s own resources and own people.” AWEPA Spanish Section

The Section also made the most of this opportunity to pay tribute to a much loved person, friend and Consul known for his kindness, his profound respect for Africa and, above all his sense of solidarity: Mr. Joan Ramon Pallàs, Honorary Consul for the Republic of Malawi. The Section was honoured by the presence of his widow Ms. Carmen Esteras who, despite the pain of her loss, is determined to continue the work her husband started, having witnessed the support he provided to those in need in Malawi. H.E. Juan Alfredo Buffa, Ambassador and Consul-General for Paraguay, presented Ms. Esteras with a small token of gratitude for Mr. Pallàs’s work and the respect the Section felt towards him.

The breakfast meeting kicks off the Section’s new “Breakfasts with Consuls” initiative which aims to forge long-lasting relationships between Spanish parliamentarians, and African Consuls through a series of informal breakfasts in Barcelona.
