The plenary assembly of the Forum of Parliaments of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (FP-ICGLR) took place in Khartoum, Republic of Sudan, on 7 and 8 December 2016.
During the plenary session, security issues in Burundi, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan were discussed. The quality of the work was enhanced by the analyses carried out by both the Commissions on “Peace and Security” and “Democracy and Good Governance” which were made operational this year with the support of AWEPA.
It was also an opportunity for the Forum to make an evaluation and a prospective analysis on the progress and challenges that still have to be reached since the signing of the ICGLR Pact on Security, Stability and Development ten years ago in Nairobi by the Heads of States and Governments of the Great Lakes Region.
AWEPA is pleased that the Forum provides a concrete framework for dialogue to contribute to the prevention and management of conflicts in the Great Lakes region. AWEPA also encourages the Forum to deepen its reflection in order to create synergies with Forum bodies, including the Executive Secretariat, which is intensifying its efforts to achieve the objectives of peace and prosperity of the ICGLR Pact.
