Possotomé, Benin – Staff members from AWEPA and the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD) attended a two-day meeting with the Beninese National Assembly’s Leadership.
The purpose of the meeting was to evaluate the current joint AWEPA-NIMD programme in Benin, which will end in December 2015, but also to discuss planning for the next phase (2016-2020) in the framework of the NIMD-AWEPA Strategic Partnership with the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Grand Popo, Benin – Following the 2015 legislative election held on 28 April 2015, 83 new Members of Parliament have been elected to the National Assembly of Benin.
Taking into account the high turnover (less than 30% of MPs retained their seats), AWEPA organised a two-day induction seminar for the entire Assembly, in the framework of its joint programme with NIMD.
The key objectives were to provide MPs with the knowledge required to settle into and function optimally in the legislature, understand its processes and business, carry out their representative function and perform work in Committees efficiently and effectively.
Additionally, the Members were introduced to the internal rules and regulations of the National Assembly as well as the parliamentary administration. The audience benefited from the experience of former Beninese MPs, European MPs and governance experts.
