Benin: Workshop on strengthening parliamentary administration

Ouidah, Benin – In the framework of their joint program on strengthening the capacity of political parties and the National Assembly of Benin, AWEPA and the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD) will organise a brainstorming workshop for parliamentary staff on the following theme: “What parliamentary administration for the Seventh Parliament?โ€ A group of thirty staff members of the National Assembly will therefore gather in Ouidah.

The proceedings of the workshop will help identify the strengths and weaknesses of the parliamentary administration during the Sixth Parliament as well as the opportunities and obstacles for its better functioning during the Seventh Parliament, but also to identify priorities and actions towards strengthening the parliamentary administration during the seventh legislature.

Background info

In fulfilling their legislative and oversight missions, the Members of the National Assembly of Benin are assisted by a parliamentary administration, which is led by professionals from various backgrounds in order to contribute to the success of parliamentary activities.

During the Sixth Parliament, the parliamentary administration has assisted the Members in the performance of their duties. At the end of this term, it is necessary to assess the level of support provided by the parliamentary administration to this legislature. Furthermore, following the parliamentary elections scheduled to take place on 26 April 2015, the Seventh Parliament will be introduced and its success will depend, among other things, on the quality of the performance of the parliamentary administration. Consequently, it is important to define the responsibilities and the necessary steps that the administration should take in order to enhance the efficiency of its support.
